Acoustics + Food ?

Huh?! Also, what is a pug doing here?

Some of you may be thinking, “what the heck is acoustics and how does that relate to food?”

We will cover lots of tasty topics like the acoustics of roasting coffee, the sizzles of frying bacon, the carbonation of sodas, and much more. Hungry yet??

Analyzing these sounds through psychoacoustics, or the perception of sound, can help us better understand our environment. Don’t you ever get annoyed when you ask your mom for the recipe to one of your favorite childhood dishes and she just goes, “I don’t really have it written down. I just kind of go with my gut.” ? In this situation her intuition is coming from reacting and adapting her senses to the processes of her cooking. But how and why? A large portion of that is her adjusting her recipe based on what she is seeing and tasting but another hugely important sense is what she is hearing! While this may seem like common sense, our perception of sound is something we often overlook and take for granted.

The other major lens for analyzing the acoustics of food is related to more purely physical properties. Fortunately, there are lot of smart people that have done the heavy lifting and analysis on this and we will break this down in a more fun and lighthearted manner.

Happy reading…and listening! ?
